Solar powered houses are not some sort of futuristic idea, is happening now and there have been important improvements, some energy companies are producing enough solar energy to power even small cities. The Italian company Tegolasolare has developed roof tiles with solar cells on them, they are called NewRoof Hybrid. They are not only beautiful; the roof tiles are extremely useful because of the integrated solar cell to collect energy from the sun and also the insulating nanotech material that reduce energy consumption used in cooling or warming your house. 

Our roofs are usually a non-used space and those tiles can collect lots of energy. Remember that the amount of solar energy that reaches the earth in one day is more than enough to meet global energy demand annually, so if we can exploit that space in our roof we can reduce the amout of CO2 gases we generate by using fossil fuel derived energy .
